Hello, I am Hryhorii Afanasiev, an architect who believes that architecture should feel personal, understandable and connected to everyday life.
I created Maisternia as an open workshop for ideas about architecture, interiors, landscape and the cities we inhabit. The Ukrainian word “майстерня”, transliterated as “Maisternia”, means a workshop or studio. It describes a place where ideas are tested, skills are developed and something meaningful gradually takes shape.
This publication is my invitation into that workshop.
You do not need to be an architect to belong here. Maisternia is for anyone who has wondered why one building feels welcoming while another feels distant, how a room can influence our emotions, or how thoughtful design can improve the life of a family, a neighbourhood or an entire community.
I believe every architectural project should begin with an idea worth defending. A building is not created by drawing a floor plan and placing walls around it. It begins by listening to the place, understanding the people who will use it and asking what the project should contribute to its time.
Architecture, interiors and landscape should not be treated as separate layers. They form one continuous experience. The exterior shapes our first encounter, the interior determines how we live and move, and the landscape connects the project to the world around it. When these elements are considered together from the beginning, architecture becomes more coherent, humane and lasting.
Maisternia will explore that process openly. I will share architectural concepts, sketches, research, observations, works in progress and reflections on the built environment. Some pieces will examine individual buildings and interiors. Others will consider larger questions about housing, public space, urban development, cultural memory and the future of our cities.
I am particularly interested in architecture that carries meaning without becoming theatrical. Good design does not need to shout. It can be precise, quiet and confident. Every line should have a purpose, every material should belong, and every decision should strengthen the relationship between people and place.
This is also a space for conversation. I want Maisternia to bring architects, designers, clients, students and curious readers closer together. Architecture becomes richer when it is discussed beyond professional circles and when people feel able to question, understand and participate in the decisions shaping their surroundings.
Clients should be treated as partners, not transactions. Communities should be listened to, not merely presented with finished answers. Design should develop through trust, curiosity and honest exchange.
Maisternia is where I will document that way of thinking - from the first uncertain idea to the final detail. It is both a professional journal and a personal exploration of what architecture can become when concept, craft and human experience are allowed to speak to one another.
